Day 9: Patterson-Galveston-San Antonio

Another 6am start this morning, the weather looked promising for an early start so we darted back to Patterson airport to avail of the break in the weather. The first port of call was Galveston airport along the Gulf of Mexico, so the scenery all the way was stunning. After refuelling at Galveston and checking the weather radar for the next leg of the journey we headed to San Antonio. Total flight time today was approximately 5 hours.

The set up here for cross-country pilots is fantastic. Each airport has a pilots lounge with food, drink, computers, complimentary car, discounts for hotels… the list is endless. Most don’t even charge for chocking the plane overnight once fuel is purchased.
Unloading the plane at San Antonio.

San Antonio is beautiful; the nicest place by far since we left Florida. Once we dropped all the luggage into the hotel we headed straight for the Alamo, which is directly opposite the front door of our hotel!

There is ample information regarding the entire history of the Alamo and specifically relating to the March 1863 infamous siege. No photography signs prevented us from taking any pics of the artefacts etc.

Across the road from the Alamo, Daire spotted the Guinness Book of Records exhibition. It turned out that there were three exhibitions for a reduced price including the Guinness Records, a 3D-5mph ride shooting goblins and a haunted house tour in the pitch black. The best by a long shot was the Guinness Records they even let you try to break a few, needless to say today was not our day to set any new records we were obviously too exhausted from all the flying.

Niamh, Daire thought you might recognise the Space Invaders game from a summer holiday as children. Very addictive I must admit.

Daire with the tallest man in the world.

Me with the shortest woman ever recorded at 2ft tall, myself not much taller at 5ft!

Me with the tallest man in the world.

The Riverwalk area of San Antonio is so picturesque and littered with restaurants and bars and that’s where we headed for dinner. We decided on Mexican and thought since we hadn’t eaten since 7am this morning we would have a three-course meal each. We barely got through half of the main course each and am sure we both will be digesting for most of the night. So full can hardly move!

Picture does not do the place justice at all!

  2. Hi Sharon, I was concerned in case Daire was getting to fancy that widest woman in the world, only thing that saved you was she could not get in the plane.... and if she sat on top of it, you were surely grounded.....
Enjoyed the pictures they are great, any further photos of plane show them from side angle it looks bigger. Love Barbara alias Mam

  3. Hi Daire and Sharon, Sharon don't mind Orla she is only jealous cause the bikini wouldn't fit her !!!(Told you I'd get you back Orla). Anyway, love reading your blog each day, your photos are great. Wish Gavin and I had tagged along as passengers ! Maybe next time !! Gavin said you would have had to hire a Cargo plane and that was probably over budget !!!!! Take care
